Fires

Buildings have been, and shall be, designed to incorporate contemporary fire-protection standards, while accommodating the unique features of the tenants workplace environments. Principal design criteria include pertinent sections of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards and Building Officials Code Administrators (BOCA) National Building Code. In addition, you should be familiar with the regulations codified by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and other industry and local standards.

Successful building design requires the integration of engineered systems, including the fire protection and life safety systems. You should work with fire protection engineer (FPE) when designing a new or remodeled building. FPEs unique expertise in fire protection and life safety makes them an important member of your team.

Do not treat fire protection and life safety design as a secondary element of the design process. Your building must be designed and built to ensure that all occupants are safe from the threat of fire.
