Toilets

Every day, we flush away almost 5 billion gallons of water. Toilets and urinals account for nearly one-third of building water consumption. Thus, the potential for savings in this area is considerable. Unless your facility is relatively new or has been refurbished recently, chances are that your toilets and urinals are consuming too much water. Current federal law requires that residential toilets manufactured after January, 1,1994 must use no more than 1.6 gallons per flush (gpf). Commercial toilets manufactured after January 1, 1997 must use no more than 1.6 gpf and urinals must use no more than 1 gpf.

Toilets are among the most common plumbing fixtures. Today's plumbing engineers can encounter a wide array of toilets. One of the first steps in any project is to identify the codes and standards that will govern these fixtures. In building plumbing design, there often are multiple jurisdictional agencies involved. The local building code, plumbing code, local sewer department requirements, health department regulations, and others need to be considered when designing a building plumbing system. Be sure to have a copy of the applicable regulations, as well as an understanding of any other jurisdictional requirements that may exist. Further, don't forget that your building's fixtures must comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act.
